Fresh from setting a new Billboard 200 record with his back-to-back No. 1 albums Future and HNDRXX, Future graces the latest cover of Billboard.
The leader of the Freeband Gang dons a bright orange E L A anorak jacket on the cover, which was shot by Meredith Jenks. Inside, he opens up his highly-publicized split with ex-fiancée Ciara.
“I feel like everything happened for a reason,” he said. “I’m happy with life now. I’m happy with life, period, even with the end of a relationship…”
Later, he adds: “I’m just not going to settle for anything, you know? Even in my life now, I know I can be a better person. I ain’t giving up on myself, so if you give up on me, I ain’t got nothing else to say for you. Because if you give up on something that’s real, it wasn’t real to you.”
Reflecting on his time with Ciara, he says he gave up drugs and tried to adapt. “They had me going the cornball route,” he explains. “What the people don’t understand is, I been kicking it with superstars when it comes to females for a minute — on the low-low with nobody don’t know-know.”
But being a superstar isn’t the most important thing for Future. “If I’m the biggest artist in the world, cool, but I want to just be me,” he explained. “I want my money to be different. I’m not trying to have rapper money. My goal is to be able to get everything from the world that I can get.”
One thing he hasn’t been able to get is a Grammy nomination. Even still, Future said that’s not a big issue for him. “The Grammys, they get what they get,” he said. “The shit that they don’t, it’s the shit that they maybe don’t want to understand…They’re not going to keep me from doing what I’m supposed to do as an artist.”
